This course is appropriate for primary and secondary (including GAT) teachers, coordinators and school leaders who want a comprehensive understanding of gifted and talented education. This course includes all aspects of the entry-level Gifted and Talented Professional Learning Modules (developed by GERRIC with DEEWR) as well as up-to-date research, strategies and time for practical planning.
A separate one-day specialist course (Leading Gifted and Talented Education: Moving from the basics to excellence) is available for staff who have completed this three-day course and for those who have an expert-level understanding of gifted and talented education.
What to expect.
Day One
We’ll explore questions like, what do we mean by “gifted and talented”? What are the characteristics of these students? How do we identify gifted and talented students? How do we track the growth of these students to ensure we are making an impact on their learning journey?
Day Two
Social and emotional characteristics and needs of gifted and talented students. We’ll also cover underachievement and strategies to identify and manage this.
Day Three
A look at designing challenging learning experiences for gifted and talented students, including questioning, differentiation, high order thinking, and assessment (pre, formative and off-level). Designing program options for gifted and talented students, including grouping, acceleration options, and compacting, mentoring and alternative options.
